Aloha! I am a liberal arts professor, educational consultant and college admissions advisor, English language and writing instructor, test prep instructor, and founder of Elite Prep Hawaii LLCbased in Honolulu, Hawaii. Originally from the NYC area, I received SAT teacher training from The Princeton Review in Princeton, NJ in 2000. Named The Princeton Review’s “SAT Teacher of the Year" in 2003, I have taught SAT Critical Reading and SAT Writing prep continuously over the last fifteen years and helped thousands of students get into top colleges and universities all over the United States.
I attended Tisch School of the Arts, New York University and graduated with an undergraduate arts degree from Rutgers University with the highest honors. With a graduate degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the CertTESOL from Trinity College of London, I have taught English language, writing and communication courses at Global Village English Language Centres, Hawaii Tokai International College, Chaminade University, and Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu.
In 2008, I began an eight-year journey at Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC) when I joined the college's full-time faculty. As Associate Professor in HTIC's Liberal Arts Program, I taught courses in public speaking and communication, writing and composition, humanities, and performing arts. In the college's academic English language program, HTIC's College Preparatory Program, I have taught courses ranging from academic writing, listening and speaking, TOEFL prep and grammar.
In 2011, I was recognized by the U.S. Embassy's English Language Specialist Program and traveled to Ukraine to conduct English language, drama, and communication workshops at the Luhansk State Institute of Culture and Arts. The following year, I chaired the annual Hawaii TESOL Conference at Hawaii Tokai International College in Honolulu, HI. As a specialist in teaching communication and test prep skills to both local and international students, I have worked with students from the US, Canada, Japan, China, South Korea, Mongolia, France, Spain, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine, Mexico, and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
An SAT prep instructor at Punahou School since 2013 and Le Jardin Academy since 2014, I am honored to announce new contracts teaching SAT prep with both Nahoku 'Ala SAT Prep and Hawaiian Mission Academy in Honolulu from 2015 to 2017. In January 2016, I joined Mid-Pacific Institute as an English and TOEFL instructor. Most recently, I became an adjunct instructor in the University of Hawaii at Manoa's University Preparation Program at Outreach College in March 2016.
When I'm not in the classroom, you can find me practicing hot yoga or exploring my passion for the arts as a professional actor/vocalist (Actor's Equity Association) and performing-arts educator.
In 2014, I married the love of my life, Adrian Lee, a local guy from Honolulu. Since then, my husband and I have been enjoying a quiet life on Honolulu's scenic Waialae Nui Ridge with our puppy, Julius the Maltese.
What Students Are Saying
"I found the experience working with Seleena so enjoyable and it made me look forward coming to tutoring. She explained everything so well and made it easy to understand. I improved so much on my strategies on answering questions because Seleena had easy steps to follow. I couldn't have asked for a better SAT tutor. Thank you so much for everything, Seleena!" -C.N.
